My pieces outline varying aspects of dragons, specifically those of Western fantasy. Within this theme, I designed the pieces to be open to the audience’s interpretation in two ways: what the parts of the piece or whole image are depicting and what the meaning of the piece is, since there was intentionally little specific meaning built into the pieces.
To create my artwork I used combinations of some stylistic choices, but stayed fairly geometric throughout. I mixed exact edges and lines created by using straight edges and caps and free handed patterns for parts like scales. While making these, I left some roughness and imperfections to give the pieces a more unique appearance. I also made an effort to make every piece with a different medium in order to better display the different components of a dragon. I also varied how strictly or loosely each piece connected to my theme, from it being loosely influenced by dragons to dragons being the center of the piece.
Overall, I was inspired by role playing games and the fantasy genre in general to make these pieces. The intent of my pieces is to lack obvious meaning in order to cause them to spark imagination for the viewer with their abstract and fantasy images. Therefore, the intent of my work is to accomplish the same purpose as my original inspiration -- to escape into imagination rather than focus on reality.

Nathanael plans to major in astrophysics in college and then move on to get his doctorate at UAH. Art will probably stay as a hobby and something to relax in Nathanael’s future. Nathanael learned that part of what he loved about art was the people in the class, since he took an independent study for Art IV. Nathanael still enjoyed the year, but he missed his classmates from the previous years.
