My senior project is called “Traveling”. Over the summer, I had the privilege to travel to Europe with many of my classmates. I was amazed by the
landscape and scenery in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. I enjoyed spending three weeks in Europe and wanted to remember all that I saw and did, and the memories I made there. From the mountains of the Swiss Alps to the small roses we saw in every garden, my series covers what the full three weeks was about. It became a time to see new land, new culture, and grow closer to both those around me and myself. I have gotten to grow both in myself and in my artwork. I used colored pencils, soft pastels, pen and ink and watercolor, and oil and acrylic paint. I liked to focus on the nature of the countryside. I picked these pictures to show the variety of nature in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Being outside in nature is relaxing for me, and to be able to combine my art with the beautiful landscapes that I had seen. Art has always been something to motivate me and help me to destress.
Being able to grow in my art has brought me more confidence and the ability to express myself. All of my pictures have a tie to nature and the landscapes I saw.
I’ve appreciated the opportunity to show myself creatively.

All across Germany and Austria, roses were planted everywhere. As they were such a prevalent flower, it felt natural to make it be the first piece in the collection.

On the second day we visited the city Rothenburg ob de Tauber. A medieval style city, Rothenburg is best known for the two towers, which are shown here, and the wall that is still intact that surrounds the city.

One of my favorite memories was walking the wall after dinner with my Mom.

This is a painting from the Kehlsteinhaus, known in english as the Eagle’s Nest, in the mountains above Berchtesgaden, Germany. During World War II, it was used as Hitler’s summer retreat. Since then this monument has been placed honoring all who suffered during this time.

This photo was taken on a hike by Garmisch, Germany. One of the things I enjoyed most on the trip was getting closer to my classmates. Here my cousin and I stopped for a picture in front of a field close to the highest point on the hike.

In many of the large bodies of water, swans could be seen. This particular swan approached us at lunch and tried to steal food from one of our people. We learned that swans can be quite aggressive.

The city of Lindau is a city on the edge of Lake Constance, which borders Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. This is also the birthplace of the story Repunzel, and it has a tower with a braided rope hanging out of it to commemorate the story.

While traveling we stayed in many different locations, but the hostel in Grindelwald, Switzerland was one of the most beautiful. This is the north face of the Eiger mountain, one of the top 10 most dangerous mountains in the world.

The best day of the trip was the hike we took through the Swiss Alps. at the top of the mountain where we had lunch, there was a frozen lake that looked beautiful in the sun. It was the most breathtaking view of the whole trip.

While in Switzerland we had the opportunity to hike across the Swiss Alps. The breathtaking view was amazing and was my favorite part of the entire trip. Hiking on the mountain, we had a good time and many laughs on the way down.
Ashley Buchheit plans on attending Auburn University as a member of the Honors College in the fall. She plans on majoring in microbiology and will be participating in the Auburn University Marching Band Flagline. Taking art at JPII has allowed her to express her creativity and experiment with different mediums she would not have been able to otherwise. While Ashley does not plan on actively pursuing art in her future, she does plan on keeping up with her art as a passtime and relaxation tool.
